The new system operates by converting electromagnetic muscle movements into text in real-time.  The advanced AI wearable is a non-invasive neck patch that is applied via double-sided medical tape. The unit is only 1.2in x 1.2in and weighs around 7 grams, according to the report. This device features a thin, flexible design meant to remain comfortable even when worn for extended periods.

How it Works

The science behind how this device operates is truly impressive. From a mechanical perspective, the device can be broken into two layers. The first layer consists of the biocompatible silicone compound polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). This stretchy layer is designed to be durable yet flexible.

The second layer integrates copper induction coils to create a magnetic field. These materials form a magnetoelastic sensing mechanism that can detect the smallest magnetic changes nearby. These are the same signals that your brain sends to your muscles to activate them when needed. As such, this tech could find its way into various additional applications that require muscle monitoring.

Interestingly, this process of using magnetic fields to track muscle movements was specifically developed by Chen and his team of engineers in 2021. In his latest application, the embedded magnetic induction coils create hi-fi electrical signals that get picked up and converted into sound.

AI Makes it Possible

The magnetoelastic sensor collects this magnetic field data and provides it to the advanced machine learning AI algorithm that converts it into speech. The process can recognize the tiny electronic pulses that activate your muscle movements. Each movement is associated with certain words which combine to create legible speech.

How the AI was Programmed

To create this highly sensitive AI wearable, the team began testing on a controlled group of eight healthy subjects. Each subject placed the wearable on their neck and was asked to speak a combination of sentences. These sentences included introductions and things like “I love you.”

Each sentence was picked due to its muscle movement, unique characteristics, and sounds. This data was provided to the machine learning algorithm alongside its existing libraries. Together the data created a full scope of muscle movements via magnetic mapping with each movement corresponding to a word.

Notably, the participants were asked to say these phrases out loud, and then silently. This strategy helped researchers to ensure that the device was working correctly. Impressively, the AI system was able to provide 94.68% accuracy during trials. If this success rate can be applied to a commercial application, millions of people will benefit from it.

Research Funded by

This project has a lot of backers supporting their efforts. Specifically, the teams secured funding from the American Heart Association, Brain & Behavior Research Foundation, the UCLA Clinical and Translational Science Institute, the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Office of Naval Research, and the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering.
